A semi flexible PCB is not too complex, but special care is required when using and designing it. Some of them are:
Component and via placement: It is not recommended to place through holes, components, or solder joints on the flexible part of the circuit board, as this can make the circuit board more susceptible to physical damage. Components must not be placed at the edges of the rigid part of the PCB to prevent short circuits. The effective weight of rigid parts with components should be almost equal to eliminate imbalances in the structure. It is not recommended to use very heavy components such as transformers and batteries to maintain balance in the PCB.
Layer and routing management: It is recommended to use as few layers as possible in the flexible part of the PCB. Try to route the flexible part of the wiring symmetrically and as evenly as possible. Layer and routing management are crucial for the signal integrity of semi flexible PCBs.
Bending radius of flexible segment: The bending radius is a standard for measuring the degree of bending of flexible printed circuit boards and will not cause any damage. Before bending the Semiflex PCB board on your own, please contact the PCB supplier to confirm its bending radius.
Only applicable for static bending applications: Semi flexible PCBs do not require multiple bending to damage the PCB. It is recommended to use the PCB without further bending after it is just installed in the casing.
Copper content: The flexible part of the PCB must have sufficient copper to conduct the expected current without generating heat. Insufficient copper content can affect the thermal management of the PCB, which may heat up the flexible parts of the PCB·
Sufficient mechanical stress: Applying a large force to bend a semi-rigid PCB may damage the flexible parts of the PCB, so it is recommended to gently bend the semi-rigid PCB.
